Sharpening, Profiling & Fitting — What's Included
Ice Box Hockey runs three core services out of one shop floor: skate sharpening, custom blade profiling, and equipment fitting. Sharpening is the service most players need most often — we run the Elite E-S4 diamond wheel system, which holds a geometry-true edge without generating the heat that can burn steel and shorten blade life. You pick the hollow: a deeper 3/8" or 1/2" hollow for players who want more bite and quicker direction changes, a middle-of-the-road 5/8" for balanced grip and glide, or a shallower 7/16" or custom radius for skaters prioritizing top-end speed and less drag. We sharpen hockey and figure skates alike, accounting for the different blade geometry figure skates require, and we'll talk through hollow choice with you at the counter if you're not sure where to start.
Equipment fitting rounds out the shop floor — skates, helmets, gloves, and protective gear fitted by staff who skate on the same ice as the players they're fitting, not just measuring a box off a shelf. Fitting is included at no extra charge with an equipment purchase, and we're happy to check the fit of gear you already own even if you didn't buy it here.
Blade profiling goes a step beyond sharpening. Where sharpening maintains the hollow, profiling reshapes the rocker — the lengthwise curve of the blade — to match your position, weight, and stride using the Elite E-P3 system. A profile tuned to a smaller, quicker forward plays differently than one built for a stay-at-home defenseman or a goalie who needs a flatter, more stable stance. We also offer TRUE SVH 3D foot scanning as part of equipment fitting, which maps your foot to help identify the right boot and, where useful, informs profile recommendations alongside your skating history.
Turnaround for sharpening is typically same-day, walk-in or by appointment; profiling and fitting work is usually best booked ahead so we can give it the time it needs. If you're new to any of these services, start with a conversation at the counter — we'll ask about your position, ice time, and any issues you've noticed in your skating before recommending sharpening, profiling, a fitting, or some combination of the three. Not sure where to begin with profiling specifically? Our blade profiling quiz walks through a few quick questions about your stride and position and points you toward a starting profile before you ever sit down on the bench.
All of it happens inside Skating Edge Ice Arena in Harbor City, CA, at 23770 S Western Ave — the same rink hosting public skate, hockey ice time, and figure skating sessions, so sharpening and fitting fit naturally around time on the ice. We serve the South Bay broadly, including Torrance, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, El Segundo, and Manhattan Beach, plus the wider Los Angeles area.
Whether you need a quick walk-in sharpening before a rec league game or a full profiling and fitting consultation before the season starts, our staff works on skates every day in the building where you'll use them. Sharpening, profiling, and fitting each have their own page with more detail if you want to read further before booking or walking in, and our team is on hand at the shop during arena hours to answer questions in person.
If you're driving in from Torrance or Redondo Beach for the first time, Skating Edge Ice Arena sits just off Western Ave in Harbor City with on-site parking, and our shop is easy to find just inside the main entrance near the pro shop counter.
